Bringing a new puppy into your home is always an exciting time, but it's also a pretty significant responsibility. It's now your job to make sure the newest member of your family has everything it needs to grow up happy and healthy. This can often be overwhelming for many people, but with the right preparation in place, it's a task that doesn't have to be stress-inducing. That's why our team here at Royal Empire French Bulldogs has compiled this helpful guide on how to prepare your home for your new puppy.
Royal Empire French Bulldog's Puppy Home Preparation Checklist
Stock up on all of the necessary supplies.
Unless you want to keep running back and forth to the pet supply store on a daily basis, it's best to make sure you have all of the necessary supplies on hand prior to your new pup's arrival. To ensure you're prepared for every scenario, the experts here at Royal Empire French Bulldogs recommends purchasing the following items before bringing your four-legged furball home:
Prepare for the inevitable accidents.
Training your puppy to go potty outside is always one of the first hurdles a new dog owner must face, and without fail, there are bound to be accidents along the way. That's why we recommend putting out puppy pee pads. These help to train your puppy and minimize the cleanup and maintenance needed after they go inside. You should also put up any rugs you have in the home for the first few months to avoid unpleasant stains. Anti-odor sprays are another helpful tool. These completely remove the smell left behind after your puppy pees inside, so they are less likely to get territorial over any part of the home.
Puppy-proof your residence.
Puppy-proofing is essential for avoiding unnecessary damage to your house and keeping your new furball safe. Place gates at the foot of any stairs in the home to prevent dangerous tumbles, and lock any cabinets with food, medicines, or harmful chemicals. If you have any house plants that are toxic to dogs (you can see a complete list here), make sure they are out of reach for the pup. You should also hide any small items like shoes and socks, because these can easily be mistaken for a chew toy.
Create a "den" for your new puppy.
A den with a crate in it is a great way to help your new puppy feel at home. It gives them a safe place to call their own, and it allows them to relax and sleep while they get more familiar with their surroundings. You can fence the den in and fill it with chew toys designed for puppies, a comfy dog bed, and a water bowl. Not only does this give your puppy its own personal safe space, but it'll help with separation anxiety because they can still see you and roam around while you're busy taking care of daily tasks.
